Most of the records in the collection pertain to the $400,000 raised by the American Baptist Education Society in 1889-1890 in order to obtain a 600,000 grant from John D. Rockefeller for the creation of an endowment for the University of Chicago. Julian Hirsch Levi was was born in the Hyde-Park district of Chicago and graduated from the University of Chicago. He spent 15 years in private law practice before joing the Reynolds Printasign company first as vice-president and later as president. He was the Executive Director of the South East Chicago Commission from 1952-1980. He was Professor of Urban Studies at the University of Chicago Law School from 1963 until 1980.
